“A very senior embryologist once told me a very interesting thing – He described the confidence graph of a clinical embryologist from the time they start doing micromanipulation on day 0.
It starts low.
Then it goes up.
And sometimes, it goes up quite fast.
You start understanding the workflow.
You understand some of the logic behind it.
Things start working.
And slowly, you start feeling like you’ve got it.
That’s where the problem can start.
Because your confidence can grow much faster than your actual understanding.
Then, with time, you start understanding the small things.
Why that particular movement matters.
Why a certain step is done in a particular way.
How many small variables can affect the outcome.
And how much uncertainty there actually is in the process.
And that’s when the confidence comes down.
Not because you have become worse.
But because you finally understand how much more complicated it actually is.
Eventually, the confidence starts going up again.
But it is different this time.
You know what you know.
You know what you don’t know.
And you realise that no matter how experienced you become, there is always more to learn.
Maybe that is what experience in embryology really does to you.”
