Arsiak Vartenian: Choosing Surrogacy After 6 Miscarriages Taught Me a Different Kind of Strength…

Arsiak Vartenian, Founder and Host of Smart Is The New Sexy, shared on LinkedIn:

“After 6 miscarriages, I did the bravest thing I could.

I stopped insisting that motherhood had to happen through my body.

For years, strength looked like trying again.

  • Another treatment.
  • Another appointment.
  • Another disappointment.

I kept thinking perseverance meant continuing until my body finally did what I wanted it to do.

But infertility taught me a different kind of strength.

Letting go.

Choosing surrogacy meant accepting that I might never experience pregnancy the way I had imagined.

  • I wouldn’t carry my daughter.
  • I wouldn’t feel her kicks inside me.
  • And finally, I wouldn’t give birth to her.

And I had to grieve that.

Because you can be incredibly grateful for another path…

and still mourn the one you thought would be yours.

For a while, part of me wondered whether choosing surrogacy meant I had failed.

My husband saw it differently.

He reminded me that letting someone else carry our child didn’t make me less of a woman.
Or less of a mother.

If anything, it required me to do something incredibly difficult: let go of control.

That changed the way I thought about strength.

Sometimes strength is trying one more time.
Sometimes it’s knowing when to stop.

And sometimes it’s allowing the dream to change shape without giving up on the dream itself.

I didn’t give up on motherhood.
I gave up on the belief that there was only one way I was allowed to become a mother.

And that’s one of the strongest things I’ve ever done.

P.S. Have you ever had to let go of how you thought something would happen?”
