Beata Blazkova: How Authority Bias Can Quietly Enter an Embryology Lab
Beata Blazkova, Senior Embryologist at Prague Fertility Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Authority Bias
A mid – level embryologist looks at the embryo.
‘I would freeze this one.’
The senior embryologist pauses.
‘I wouldn’t freeze it.’
‘Why?’
‘I don’t think it has enough potential.’
‘Okay.’
The decision is made.
This is how authority bias can quietly enter an embryology lab.
Experience matters. A senior embryologist has seen more embryos, more outcomes and more difficult cases. Their judgement carries weight for a reason.
And in a laboratory, there are situations where you need to trust the judgement of someone more experienced.
But there is still value in asking:
- Why wouldn’t you freeze it?
- What are you seeing?
- Can we look at it together?
Those questions are not disrespectful.
They are part of learning. And they are part of good clinical decision-making.
The most experienced person in the room may still be right.
But understanding why they are right matters just as much as following the decision.”
