Christina Walker: Can We Improve Fertility by Treating Metabolic Health Before Conception?
Christina Walker, Program Director at CLS Event and Publication, shared on LinkedIn:
“Can we improve fertility by treating metabolic health before conception?
For decades, fertility care has primarily focused on reproductive organs, hormones, ovulation, sperm quality, and assisted reproductive technologies.
But an important question is gaining increasing attention:
What if reproductive health begins long before conception – with metabolic health?
Obesity, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction can influence reproductive physiology in complex ways.
For women, these factors may intersect with ovulatory function, PCOS, oocyte quality, endometrial receptivity, pregnancy complications, and overall reproductive outcomes.
For men, metabolic health may also influence testosterone levels, sperm concentration, motility, morphology, and sperm DNA integrity.
This raises an important opportunity for researchers:
- Can metabolic health become a core component of preconception care?
- Can lifestyle interventions improve fertility outcomes before ART?
- How do insulin resistance and inflammation affect oocyte and sperm quality?
- What role can precision nutrition and personalized lifestyle plans play in preconception health?
- Can improving parental metabolic health influence health outcomes beyond conception?
These questions highlight why fertility research increasingly requires collaboration across disciplines.

- Reproductive endocrinology
- Nutrition science
- Metabolic medicine
- Embryology
- Andrology
- Public health
- Precision medicine
The future of fertility care may begin before a patient ever reaches the fertility clinic.
