Devyanshi Dixit: Why Do Some Women Keep Getting UTIs?
Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication and Conference Manager at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, shared on LinkedIn:
“Why Do Some Women Keep Getting UTIs?
One UTI clears.
Then another appears.
And another.
For some women, urinary tract infections become a frustrating cycle of burning, urgency, discomfort, antibiotics… and recurrence.
But why does this keep happening?
A UTI returning isn’t always ‘just bad luck.’
Several factors can make recurrent UTIs more likely:
The urinary microbiome
The community of microorganisms around the urinary and genital tract may influence susceptibility to infection.
Bacterial persistence
Some bacteria can survive treatment or remain within urinary tissues, contributing to recurrence.
Hormonal changes
Declining estrogen, particularly around and after menopause, can change the vaginal and urinary environment and increase UTI risk.
Incomplete bladder emptying
Urine remaining in the bladder can provide an opportunity for bacteria to multiply.
Antibiotic exposure
Repeated antibiotic use can affect microbial communities and contribute to antimicrobial resistance.
Sexual activity
Sexual activity can increase the likelihood of bacteria entering the urinary tract in some women.
But here’s the important question:
Is every ‘UTI’ actually a UTI?
Repeated urinary symptoms do not always mean repeated bacterial infections.
Conditions such as vaginal infections, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, bladder pain syndrome, or other urinary disorders can sometimes produce similar symptoms.
That’s why recurrent symptoms deserve proper evaluation rather than automatically repeating the same treatment.
Recurrent UTIs deserve answers – not an endless cycle of symptoms and antibiotics.
