Marco Zaccaria: How to Use Power Doppler Ultrasound in Transvaginal Assessment of Uterine Fibroids

Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at ESGE European Society Gynecology Endoscopy, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Vascularization is the primary mechanism that delivers the essential oxygen and nutrients required for #uterinefibroids to grow, survive, and cause clinical symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding

While fibroids depend heavily on blood flow, their anatomical vascular structure is vastly different from normal uterine muscle

Leiomyomas are surrounded by a highly dense, compressed network of expanded arteries and veins (pseudocapsule) and this outer ring acts as the primary feeding source

Unlike the rich periphery, the inner core of a fibroid is relatively poorly vascularized, relying on small vessels that penetrate inward from the outer capsule

Fibroid tissue overproduces proteins like Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (TGF-β): these molecules constantly signal the body to build new, irregular blood vessels to sustain tumor growth

An interesting study worth looking into:
