Vasundara Jagannathan: Does a ‘Beautiful’ Embryo Always Mean a Healthy One?
Vasundara Jagannathan, Medical Director and Clinical Head at Sri Chakra Fertility Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Does a ‘beautiful’ embryo always mean a healthy one?
I was honored to present our oral paper (Paper #1366), ‘Correlation of Embryo Morphology with Genetic Competence: A PGT-A Based Analysis,’ at the Aspire 2026 congress in CNCC Beijing on 08/05/2026.
Our research delved into the critical intersection of visual grading and genetic reality. While morphology remains our frontline tool, our findings reinforce that the timing of blastocyst development is a powerful indicator of genetic outcomes.
Key Insights from our Study:
The ‘Timing’ Factor: Our data aligns with recent 2026 literature showing that embryos reaching the blastocyst stage by Day 5 have a significantly higher likelihood of being euploid compared to slower-developing counterparts.
Morphology vs. Genetics: We found that while high-grade blastocysts (AA, AB, BA) are statistically more likely to be euploid, PGT-A can ‘rescue’ poor-quality blastocysts that might otherwise be overlooked, significantly reducing miscarriage rates (from ~51% to ~13%) and improving live birth outcomes.
The Partnership: Morphology and PGT-A are not competitors; they are partners. Morphology helps us prioritize the ‘best among the euploid,’ but genetic competence remains the ultimate driver of clinical success.
Special Acknowledgments:
This work would not have been possible without the dedication of my incredible co-authors , patients and Sri Chakra Fertility, Scale_SCF.
Special thanks to Dr Sindhuja Srinivasan for her invaluable expertise and tireless efforts .
It was a privilege to share the stage at the CNCC with global experts in reproductive medicine. Discussions like these – focusing on refining embryo selection – are what move the needle for our patients.”
