Marco Zaccaria: The Three Faces of Endometriosis, What Every Woman Should Know?

Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at ESGE European Society Gynecology Endoscopy, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“There are three main types of endometriosis lesions, and each of these affects the pelvic area differently, causing chronic pain and potential fertility issues

CYSTS (endometriomas), also known as ‘chocolate cysts’ because of the dark, thick blood they contain:.

  • they form mainly on the ovaries when endometrial tissue bleeds during the menstrual cycle but has no way to escape
  • They can range in size from a few millimeters to several centimeters and do not resolve on their own
  • If they become very large, they can rupture, causing sharp pain

NODULES that represent the manifestation of deep endometriosis:

  • Clusters of solid, infiltrating tissue that penetrate pelvic organs to a depth of more than 5 millimeters
  • Common sites: They are frequently found on the uterosacral ligaments, the rectovaginal septum, the bladder, or the intestines
  • Specific symptoms: They cause severe pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), difficulty or pain during bowel movements (dyschezia) especially during menstruation

Pelvic ADHESIONS are the result of the body’s attempt to ‘repair’ chronic inflammation:

These are actual internal scars and bands of fibrous tissue that literally ‘glue’ neighboring organs (the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and intestines) together.

Impact: They restrict the normal mobility of the organs, causing constant sharp pains and postural discomfort

If they involve the fallopian tubes, they can block them, compromising fertility.”
