“Don’t Stop Metformin at a Positive Test: New Data Shows Continuing Through Trimester 1 Cut Miscarriage Risk in Half
A massive new systematic review and meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology analysed data from over 1,700 women to settle the debate on metformin timing. The results showed that continuing metformin through the first trimester significantly boosted clinical pregnancy rates and reduced the odds of miscarriage by over 50% compared to stopping immediately upon confirmation. Researchers propose that abrupt stopping causes a harmful ‘insulin rebound’ effect during critical early fetal development.
