In reproductive biology, mitochondria are far more than energy – producing organelles.
They influence ATP generation, calcium signalling, redox balance, apoptosis and cellular homeostasis- processes that are fundamental to oocyte competence and early embryo development.
From the oocyte to the blastocyst, mitochondrial function continuously adapts to the changing metabolic demands of development.
With reproductive ageing and cellular stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative imbalance may affect oocyte quality and embryonic developmental potential.
Understanding mitochondrial biology therefore adds another dimension to how we think about oocyte competence, embryo development and reproductive outcomes.
