Kashif Munir: Sperm Capacitation – A Critical Step in Fertilization
Kashif Munir, Embryologist at Australian concept infertility medical center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Sperm Capacitation: A Critical Step in Fertilization
Sperm capacitation is a complex biochemical and molecular process that transforms ejaculated sperm into fertilization-competent cells.
During capacitation, sperm undergo physiological changes that promote:
- Hyperactivated motility
- Zona pellucida recognition and binding
- Acrosome reaction readiness
- Enhanced fertilization potential
In vivo, this process naturally occurs within the female reproductive tract.
In assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF and ICSI, embryologists recreate optimal capacitating conditions through carefully designed laboratory media and sperm preparation protocols.
Understanding capacitation is essential for improving fertilization outcomes and advancing reproductive medicine.”
