Khalid Khan: Obstetric Violence in High-Income Countries
Khalid Khan, Professor and Distinguished Researcher at the University of Granada, shared on LinkedIn:
”Obstetric violence in high-income countries: an uncomfortable challenge for modern healthcare.
Disrespect and abuse during childbirth are often associated with resource-poor settings. Yet evidence documenting these experiences also comes from high-income countries with highly educated populations and sophisticated healthcare systems.
This is important. It challenges the assumption that advanced medical infrastructure, high educational attainment and access to modern healthcare automatically guarantee respectful, person-centred care.
These experiences raise questions that extend beyond resource availability. They require us to examine professional power, institutional culture, accountability and the extent to which women’s autonomy is genuinely respected in clinical practice.
A healthcare system can be technologically advanced and clinically sophisticated while still failing women in the way care is delivered.
Quality maternity care must therefore be judged not only by clinical outcomes, but also by whether women are treated with dignity, listened to and involved in decisions about their own bodies.
In my Substack article, I examine the evidence on obstetric violence, disrespect and abuse during childbirth.
