Khalil Faaed: Can Technology Truly Replace the Judgment of an Experienced Embryologist?
Khalil Faaed, Embryologist at Modern IVF Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Expert Eye or the Time-Lapse Lens? Reassessing the Gold Standard for Human Embryo Selection
Time-lapse imaging has transformed embryo assessment by providing continuous, non-invasive monitoring and revealing morphokinetic events that conventional observation cannot capture.
But one critical question remains:
Can technology truly replace the judgment of an experienced embryologist?
While time-lapse generates valuable developmental data, embryo selection extends beyond morphokinetics. It requires expert interpretation of embryo morphology, developmental dynamics, and clinical context. To date, evidence has not consistently shown that time-lapse imaging alone improves live birth rates compared with conventional assessment by experienced embryologists.
Perhaps the future is not human expertise versus technology, but human expertise enhanced by technology. The most effective embryo selection strategy may be one that integrates experienced embryologists, time-lapse imaging, and artificial intelligence.
The question is no longer who sees more it’s who understands more.
Can technology identify embryo competence, or does the experienced embryologist remain the true gold standard?.”
