“A little ‘bun’ in the IVF lab
Every now and then, embryology gives us something a little unexpected.
This particular 4-cell embryo caught my eye because of its rather unusual and beautifully symmetrical appearance. With four rounded blastomeres arranged around the centre, it looked remarkably like a four-leaf clover bun – almost as if someone had placed a tiny piece of bread under the time-lapse imaging!
Embryos don’t always look perfectly textbook, and that’s part of what makes embryology so fascinating. Beyond the morphology we carefully assess, every embryo can have its own unique appearance and story as it continues its development.
Sometimes, a little resemblance to a bun is enough to make a long day in the IVF lab a bit more enjoyable.”
