Marco Zaccaria: Kurt Semm – The Courage to Defy the Rules to Pursue an Ideal and Strive for Progress
Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at ESGE European Society of Gynecological Endoscopy, shared on LinkedIn:
”On September 13, 1980, Kurt Semm became the first gynecologic surgeon to perform a laparoscopic surgical procedure at the University of Kiel.
He had the audacity and courage to defy the rules in order to pursue an ideal and strive for progress, even at the risk of being marginalized.
Thanks to his early career as a toolmaker and precision engineer, he revolutionized surgery by inventing the technical instruments that made minimally invasive procedures safe.
What were his most important contributions and inventions
- Electronic CO₂ insufflator: an automated device for pumping carbon dioxide into the abdomen while constantly monitoring pressure
- Thermocoagulation: a low-voltage system for safely stopping uterine and ovarian bleeding
- Pelvitrainer: a geometric simulator designed to allow surgeons to practice ‘keyhole surgery’ before operating on patients
When he first presented his procedures at conferences, some colleagues went so far as to unplug the projector, accusing him of performing unethical surgery.
Time has fully vindicated Semm’s insights: today, laparoscopic surgery is the global standard thanks to shorter recovery times, minimal scarring, and less postoperative pain for patients.”
