Margaret Cali: Your Next IVF Scan – A Plan for Support, Not a Prediction

Margaret Cali, IVF Readiness Integration Strategist, shared on LinkedIn:

“Knowing what happens in an IVF cycle is not the same as knowing how to face it again.

A woman returning to treatment may understand the medication schedule, the scans, and the next steps.

What she may be less sure about is how it will feel to wait for another result after the last one hurt.

‘This cycle could be different’ can be well-meant reassurance. But it may not meet the concern she is carrying.

She may already know it could be different. She also remembers the phone call, the unexpected numbers, or the moment the plan changed.

Understanding the process and feeling supported through it are different needs.

Rather than encouraging a fresh start, the team could make room for a question:

‘Is there anything about last time you’d like us to understand before this appointment?’

The answer might open a conversation about clearer information, someone being present for a result, or a check-in afterwards. It also lets her say what would help, rather than others deciding for her.

A simple support plan for a scan, covering before, during and after, can be one way to start that conversation.

Emotional readiness is not about leaving the previous experience behind. It is about making room for that experience while considering what support would be useful now.

For those supporting women through fertility treatment, how do you make space for what someone is bringing into the next cycle?”
