Mervat Alkarkatli: IVF Care Is Evolving and So Should the Roles Within It
Mervat Alkarkatli, Group Scientific Director at Fakih IVF Fertility Center, shared on LinkedIn:
”IVF care is evolving – and so should the roles within it.
For years, fertility care has often been divided into separate worlds: the clinic, the embryology laboratory, counseling, and patient coordination.
But the patient experiences only one IVF journey.
I believe the next generation of fertility care needs a professional role that connects these worlds: someone who understands the clinical pathway, speaks the language of embryology, supports the patient through complex decisions, and uses data to identify where care can be improved.
From IVF counseling to data-driven fertility care. This role is not simply about scheduling appointments or communicating instructions.
It is about connecting:
- Embryology practice – understanding laboratory milestones, embryo development, cryopreservation, PGT pathways, quality, traceability, and the limitations of laboratory information.
- Clinical practice – understanding treatment plans, investigations, stimulation, procedures, outcomes, and the clinical decisions surrounding each IVF cycle.
- IVF counseling and patient navigation – translating complex information into language patients can understand and helping them move through the journey with clarity and realistic expectations.
- Data-driven practice – using treatment data, laboratory outcomes, patient characteristics, previous cycles, and quality indicators to recognize patterns, improve communication, and support better-informed decisions.
The real value appears when these areas stop functioning as separate silos. An embryology result should not remain only in the laboratory. A clinical decision should not be disconnected from laboratory history.
A previous failed cycle should become information for the next cycle. And the patient should never be the person responsible for connecting all the pieces.
This is where I see the future of the IVF Clinical Coordinator Fertility Care Navigator: at the intersection of science, clinical care, data, quality, and the patient experience.
- Not replacing the physician.
- Not replacing the embryologist.
- Not replacing the counselor.
But, connecting them…
Because excellence in IVF is not only about what happens inside the laboratory or consultation room. It is about how intelligently we connect every step of the fertility journey.”
