”Embryo Grading: Is a ‘Good Grade’ Really a Good Embryo?

When we look at an embryo under the microscope, we often see a grade:

4AA. 5AA. 3BB…

But what does that grade really tell us?

Embryo grading is a morphological assessment of the embryo at a specific point in its development.

For blastocysts, embryologists commonly evaluate features such as:

Expansion
How expanded is the blastocyst?

Inner Cell Mass (ICM)
What is the appearance and organization of the cell mass that contributes to the embryo?

Trophectoderm (TE)
How does the trophectoderm appear and how are its cells organized?

But there is an important point:

An embryo grade is not a guarantee of implantation or pregnancy.

Morphology gives us valuable information, but embryo developmental potential is influenced by multiple biological factors.

That is why embryo assessment should never be reduced to a number or two letters.

It is about making a careful, standardized morphological assessment that can support clinical decision-making.
