Rohit Gutgutia: It’s the Probability of Conception That Comes Down with Low AMH, Not the Possibility

“So often one comes across posts like this: ’47-year-old woman gives birth naturally.’ At times, your patients send these posts and links to your inbox.

Sometimes there is additional chatni-churan stuff like lifestyle changes, fertility reset, fertility diet, fertility cocktail of vitamins and antioxidants, which also get peddled along with these claims.

Unfortunately, at times, fertility doctors are also putting up posts where they show AMH reports with values less than 0.5, where they did IVF and the client miraculously conceived. And yes, there are votaries of PRP as well in this group.

All is good so far, as the intention is to share positive, hopeful stories to inspire the countless women with low AMH. But very often the narrative shifts to ‘me and my greatness,’ which is where the plot gets lost.

Let’s not harbor any confusion here. Female ovaries cannot make new eggs.

AMH is not always accurate. AMH tests are not always reliable, but even then, a low AMH value generally reflects a low egg count fairly well. And we surely know that the egg is the most important building block for a pregnancy.

So when we have fewer eggs, we have lower chances. Full stop.

But even with fewer eggs, people keep getting pregnant all the time, with any kind of diet, supplements and/or lifestyle, and with IVF using a special protocol or without one.

The problem is that no treatment/intervention can consistently deliver results in such women, nor can it be said that they shall never ever get pregnant. And so, making boastful claims is basically misleading the client.

It is the probability of conception that comes down with low AMH, not the possibility.”
