Rajeev Agarwal: An Important Nutrient When Preparing for Pregnancy

Rajeev Agarwal, Director of Renew Healthcare, shared on LinkedIn:

“The nutrient is choline.

Most people preparing for pregnancy know about folic acid, and they should.

It lowers the risk of neural tube defects, and I recommend it to every woman trying to conceive.

But folic acid isn’t the only nutrient your baby’s early development depends on.

Choline helps build your baby’s brain and spinal cord.

It works alongside folate during the first weeks of pregnancy, when the neural tube is forming, often before you even know you’re pregnant.

The problem:

  • Most women don’t get enough of it from their diet.
  • Many prenatal vitamins contain little or no choline.
  • Vegetarian diets in particular can fall short, because eggs are one of the richest sources.

The recommended intake during pregnancy is about 450 mg a day.

One whole egg gives you roughly 150 mg.

Other sources include fish, chicken, soybeans, paneer, milk, peanuts and some lentils.

So if you’re preparing for pregnancy, natural or IVF:

  • Keep taking your folic acid
  • Check whether your prenatal contains choline
  • Look at your diet honestly, especially if you’re vegetarian

Preparing your body isn’t about taking more supplements.

It’s about not missing the ones that matter.

Talk to your doctor before starting anything new.”
