Robert Borowczyk: An IVF Conversion Rate Can Jump from 40% to 50% without 1 Extra Patient Starting Treatment

”An IVF conversion rate can jump from 40% to 50% without one extra patient starting treatment.

Take a simple example.

At inquiry, 10 patients are placed in the same group. Later, 4 of them start treatment.

The report shows 4 out of 10 – 40%.

After consultation, the clinic knows more about the other patients. Two of them are moved to another group.

Those two patients did NOT move forward. Their clinic stage stayed exactly the same.

Only the label changed.

But the first group now has 8 patients, while the same 4 treatment starts remain.

The report now shows 4 out of 8 – 50%.

The rate ‘improved’ because the group became smaller, even though the number of treatment starts stayed at 4.

That can become a real business problem.

A CFO may put more budget behind a patient path that looks stronger partly because the people being counted changed halfway through.

For me, that result only means something if the same group started and finished the measurement.

Would you trust the 50% result?”
