Rohit Gutgutia: AI in IVF – Real Promise or the Next Add-On?

Rohit Gutgutia, Medical Director at Nova IVF Fertility, shared on LinkedIn:

“AI in IVF: real promise or the next add-on?

AI is the new buzzword in IVF. AI to pick the best embryo, AI to predict success, AI to decide the stimulation dose. And knowing our industry, it shall not be long before it turns up as a premium line item on clients’ bills.

This is not a note against technology. IVF itself is a child of technology. And some of what AI is doing is genuinely exciting.

Standardising embryo grading, where two embryologists looking at the same embryo do not always agree. Scanning samples to find the odd viable sperm in men who were told there was none.

Trying to tell chromosomally normal embryos apart without a biopsy. Flagging when a lab’s performance starts to slip.

Done right, this is AI quietly making good labs more consistent and giving hope to couples who had very little.

The problem is with how it is likely to be sold. Right now the evidence that AI picks a better embryo than a good experienced embryologist, in terms of actual live births, is still thin.

Doesn’t mean it shall never get there. It probably will. But selling it today with the suggestion of better odds is the same old story as PRP and immune cocktails, just with a shinier label.

Then there is the client side of AI. Couples now walk in having asked ChatGPT about their reports. Honestly, that is still better than taking advice from a reel, and many do come better informed.

But a chatbot has not examined the couple, does not know their history, and is not accountable for what it says. A good place to start the questions.

Not the final word.

So by all means let’s use AI to make our labs better, our records cleaner and our clients better informed. But till the data is in, let’s not sell it as the reason a couple shall finally take a baby home.

Let’s position AI as an efficiency tool, not an enhancement tool.

Thoughts?”
