Samer R. Hammoudeh: AI in the IVF Laboratory, From Promise to Proof
Samer R. Hammoudeh, IVF lab director at Fakih IVF Fertility Center, shared on LinkedIn:
“AI in the IVF Laboratory: From Promise to Proof
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly moving from the conference stage into the IVF laboratory.
The question is no longer ‘Can AI analyze embryos?’
The more important question is:
‘How do we integrate AI safely, scientifically, and meaningfully into clinical embryology?’
The latest ASRM guidance highlights an important reality: AI may become a valuable adjunct to embryologist expertise, but widespread adoption requires robust validation and evidence that it improves meaningful outcomes-not simply predictive scores.
The next phase of AI in IVF could extend far beyond embryo selection:
- Embryo assessment and morphokinetic analysis
- AI-assisted sperm selection
- Laboratory workflow optimization
- Automation and robotics
- Predictive analytics and personalized treatment
- Quality management and error reduction
But technology alone will not transform the IVF laboratory.
Data quality, validation, transparency, regulation, clinical outcomes, and- most importantly- human expertise will determine whether AI becomes truly valuable.
For embryologists and IVF laboratories, the future may not be ‘AI versus embryologist.’
It may be:
‘Embryologist + AI = better-informed decisions.’
The real innovation will be turning powerful algorithms into safe, validated clinical tools that ultimately benefit patients.”
