Sean Lauber: How Common Are Embryo Mix-Ups During IVF?
Sean Lauber, Founder of Remembryo, shared on LinkedIn:
“Embryo mix-ups can happen during IVF, but they appear to be extremely rare.
How common are mix-ups?
- ESHRE estimates that serious mix-ups involving embryos, sperm or eggs occur in about 1–2 per 100,000 cases. However, nobody knows the true rate because some mix-ups may never be discovered or reported.
How do they happen?
- Documented cases suggest that serious mix-ups usually involve several identification or verification failures, rather than one person making one mistake.
How do IVF labs prevent them?
- Labs use multiple safeguards, including patient identification, sample labeling, manual witnessing, and electronic witnessing systems that use barcodes or RFID to help match samples with the correct patient. These systems can catch potential mismatches, although no system can completely eliminate the possibility of an error.
Does IVF lab workload matter?
- IVF labs can have many procedures scheduled on the same day, and research has raised concerns about heavy workloads and understaffing. Professional guidelines recommend staffing labs based on workloads so there is enough time for procedures, witnessing and other safety checks.
Can DNA testing confirm genetic parentage?
- Yes. DNA testing can determine whether an embryo, pregnancy or child is genetically related to the intended parents. However, DNA testing isn’t routinely offered after IVF, but may be used when there is a specific concern that a mix-up occurred.
Mix-ups can have serious emotional and legal consequences when they happen. I’ve put together a new Evidence Guide covering the documented cases, prevention, genetic testing, legal issues, embryologist workload, and more.
