Sergio Haimovich: AI Is Already Reshaping Scientific Publishing and Disclosure Is Lagging Behind
Sergio Haimovich, Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa at the AAGL Board of Directors, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“AI is already reshaping scientific publishing—and disclosure is lagging behind.
In an analysis of 1,600 scientific abstracts:
- 25.8% were flagged for potential AI influence
- 19.1% of the flagged abstracts appeared entirely AI-generated
- Only 5.1% disclosed the use of AI
The highest proportion was found in reproductive endocrinology and infertility journals: 35%, compared with only 6.7% in family planning.
AI use showed no significant geographical differences and no meaningful relationship with journal impact factor.
The real concern is not simply whether researchers use AI. It is whether AI is being used transparently, critically, and responsibly.
Scientific publishing urgently needs clearer disclosure standards, stronger editorial policies, and education on the ethical use of generative AI.
AI should support scientific thinking—not replace it.
