Diana Olmeda: The Side of Surrogacy I Wish More People Could See

Diana Olmeda, Founder, Chief Executive Officer, and President at Surrogate Alternatives, shared on LinkedIn:

“This is what hope looks like.

These photos capture two moments that may seem small to someone outside of our industry, but to those of us who live and breathe surrogacy, they mean everything.

An embryo transfer. A surrogate surrounded by people cheering her on. The phone call or message we’ve all been waiting for: you’re confirmed pregnant!

Behind every one of these moments is an intended parent, or parents, just hoping for the chance to build their family. There is a surrogate who has made an extraordinary and very personal decision to help make that possible, and there is an entire team walking beside them through every milestone, every nervous waiting period, and every celebration.

I’ve spent nearly three decades in this industry, and I still get excited when I see photos like these. I hope I never stop feeling this way.

These photos feel especially meaningful right now…

This week, surrogacy was specifically referenced in a new federal executive order addressing birthright citizenship, including commercial surrogacy arrangements involving children born in the United States. For those of us who have dedicated our careers to ethical surrogacy and family building, seeing our industry discussed in this way is deeply concerning.

There are legitimate conversations to be had about laws, safeguards, and preventing exploitation, but I hope that in those conversations, we never lose sight of the human beings behind the word surrogacy.

Surrogacy isn’t simply a transaction.

  • It is a woman choosing to help another family.
  • It is intended parents daring to hope (and try) again.
  • It is an embryo transfer.
  • It is waiting for that pregnancy test result.
  • It is the words ‘confirmed pregnant.’
  • And sometimes, it is the beginning of a family that once seemed impossible.

This is the side of surrogacy I wish more people could see.

Congratulations, Danesia and Janet. And thank you to our amazing SAI team for being there for these moments, not just as staff, but as part of the journey.

Hope is still happening, and we will continue to stand for the families and surrogates who make this extraordinary journey possible.”
