Fiona Pathiraja-Møller: The Vital Sign Medicine Keeps Missing
Fiona Pathiraja-Møller, Managing Partner at Crista Galli Ventures, shared on LinkedIn:
”The vital sign medicine keeps missing
Medicine measures vital signs (temperature, pulse, breathing, blood pressure) but often ignore how the menstrual cycle might impact them.
More women are tracking their cycles and bringing that data to appointments. But cycle tracking still rarely shows up in research
The menstrual cycle directly impacts all four vital signs: temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.
Yet researchers are only beginning to uncover the invisible impact of cycle changes
- Recent research found oestrogen levels change how common drugs are metabolised
- Another study found women experience more vaccine side effects in their follicular phase
Despite this, only 44% of NIH-funded research reports sex-specific results (and even fewer take menstrual cycles into account)
Menstrual cycles are vital variables and valuable health data.
Science should treat them that way.”
