Chantelle Pereira: Endometriosis Paper Highlights Diagnostic Delays and Gaps in Patient Care
Chantelle Pereira, Quad Fellow at Institute of International Education, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in Women’s Health Reports:
“Have you ever wondered what living with endometriosis is really like?
I’m proud to share that our peer-reviewed article has just been published in Women’s Health Reports, marking my first publication as first author.
What makes this paper distinct is its dual lens. It combines lived experience with a review of global literature to illuminate the reality of endometriosis, from early symptoms and diagnostic delays to ongoing challenges in care.
Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 7 people assigned female at birth in Australia. Yet it remains under-recognised, with diagnosis taking an average of 8 years.
In this paper, we highlight eight key challenges in the diagnosis and management of endometriosis, including gaps in education, the normalisation of severe pain, fragmented medical records, barriers to specialist care, insufficient research funding, and limited treatment options.
At its core, this work aims to bridge the gap between patient experience and clinical understanding by humanising what it means to live with endometriosis.
At a time when endometriosis care is receiving growing public attention, I hope this work contributes to more patient-centred, evidence-based research, education, and policy, and ultimately, better outcomes for those affected.
I share this with optimism that by sharing stories alongside science, we can help people recognise symptoms earlier, seek care sooner, and feel less alone, so fewer people have to go through the same experience.
Thank you to the clinicians, researchers, advocates, and patients driving this field forward. I’m especially grateful to Dr. Sten Vermund for his guidance and belief in this work.
