“Enhanced Myometrial Vascularity (EMV) is an ultrasound finding characterized by a temporary increase in blood flow within the myometrium
It typically develops as a result of changes or trauma to the uterine circulation and the most common causes include:
- Outcomes of pregnancy: It is frequently observed following childbirth, a miscarriage, or an induced abortion
- Retained products of conception (RPOC): Fragments of the placenta or pregnancy tissue remaining in the uterus keep local blood vessels dilated and hyperactive
- Recent intrauterine procedures: Procedures such as dilation and curettage, cesarean delivery, or removal of fibroids
The diagnosis is primarily made using transvaginal ultrasound with Color Doppler and on examination, EMV presents with:
Tortuous, dilated vascular structures resembling small tubes that infiltrate the uterine muscle tissue
Turbulent, high-velocity blood flow (often assessed by measuring peak systolic velocity).”
