Why PCOS Gets Worse in Urban Life: It’s Your Diet, Not Just Genes – Fertility Plus
Fertility Plus shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Shocking Truth: Why PCOS Hits Harder in Cities – It’s Your Diet, Not Just Genes!
Imagine simple village meals of rice and veggies keeping PCOS symptoms much milder, while city life with junk food, sugary drinks, and processed eats makes everything worse. This eye-opening study looked at over 700 women in India with PCOS.
Researchers grouped them by diet: from basic rural eating to semi-urban vegetarian, non-veg, and full urban ‘modern’ diets heavy in processed foods and meat. The results were clear – as women shifted to city-style eating, their symptoms became far more severe.
Unwanted facial or body hair (hirsutism) skyrocketed from just 22% in the rural group to a staggering 89% in the urban junk-food group! Women on city diets also carried more weight and showed much higher insulin resistance – a major driver behind PCOS troubles like irregular periods, acne, and fertility challenges.
The key message? Modern urban diets full of processed foods are making PCOS tougher to manage in India as lifestyles change. It’s powerful proof that what we eat can dramatically change how PCOS feels and looks – and small diet shifts might make a real difference.
This isn’t about blame; it’s about understanding how our changing world affects women’s health.
