“One embryo, two different biopsy strategies.
Have you ever wondered why some embryos are biopsied on Day 3, while others are biopsied at the blastocyst stage?
On ‘Day 3’, a single blastomere can be removed from an early cleavage-stage embryo.
The main advantages are the early timing and relatively simple cell isolation.
However, the small amount of DNA and the possibility of mosaicism may sometimes lead to inconclusive or less representative results.
By ‘Day 5/6’, the embryo has reached the blastocyst stage.
Several ‘trophectoderm (TE) cells’ can be collected while leaving the ‘inner cell mass (ICM)’ untouched.
The larger sample provides more DNA for genetic testing, including ‘PGT-A, PGT-M and PGT-SR’.
After blastocyst biopsy, the embryo is usually vitrified while the genetic analysis is performed and can be transferred later in a frozen embryo transfer cycle.”
