Exploring Public Perspectives on Mitochondrial Disease and Donation – RBMO
Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO) shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Ezra Kneebone et al. published in RBMO:
“Mitochondrial disease can affect any organ or tissue in the body, at any age, with varying severity. Mild cases of mitochondrial disease can present as fatigue and exercise intolerance, whereas severe cases can be life threatening. In Australia, where this study is set, one baby is born each week with a severe form of mitochondrial disease. There is currently no cure, and treatment consists of symptom management.
The findings of this new survey study indicate that the Australian public is largely supportive of mitochondrial donation’s clinical implementation, if shown to be safe in the clinical trial program that is currently progressing. The challenge, explained by the authors, is ensuring adequate understanding of complex and controversial technologies to arrive at confident conclusions about public acceptability. To address this, this study provided participants with information about the technology and then assessed their views in this representative survey. The findings indicate that the Australian public has low levels of knowledge about mitochondrial disease and mitochondrial donation, but once informed, are supportive of it.
