Thorsten Waloschek: 3D-Bioprinted Placentas Could Predict and Prevent Preeclampsia

“Scientists in Sydney have 3D-bioprinted miniature placentas – a breakthrough that could transform how we understand pregnancy complications like preeclampsia.
Until now, studying the early placenta has been almost impossible. By the time a baby is born, the organ looks very different from its first-trimester state, and animal models don’t capture the unique biology of humans. Bioprinting changes that. Researchers can now grow organoids that closely mimic early placental tissue, expose them to stressors linked to preeclampsia, and even test potential therapies.
It is still early days, but this feels like a leap toward a future where complications in pregnancy could be predicted, prevented, or treated before they put lives at risk. Advances like this remind us how much innovation in bioengineering can ripple far beyond the lab, reshaping the health of generations to come.”
