Devyanshi Dixit: Menarche and Mental Health – More Than a Reproductive Milestone

Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication and Conference Manager at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health, shared on LinkedIn:

“Menarche and mental health: more than a reproductive milestone.

A girl’s first period changes more than her calendar.

It can change how she sees her body, understands herself, and experiences the world around her.

The first period isn’t just biology.

Menarche happens during a period of rapid hormonal, physical, social, and emotional development.

For some girls, it may come with:

  • Mood changes
  • Anxiety or worry
  • Body-image concerns
  • Sleep disruption
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling embarrassed, different, or unprepared

And sometimes, the hardest part isn’t the period itself.
It’s the silence surrounding it.

Timing can matter.

Research has found associations between earlier puberty and certain mental-health outcomes during adolescence.

But early menarche does not mean a girl will develop a mental-health condition.
Her experience is shaped by many factors-including genetics, family support, social environment, stress, body image, and menstrual education.

So what can help?

  • Teach girls what to expect before their first period.
  • Make conversations about menstruation normal-not embarrassing.
  • Create supportive school environments.
  • Take persistent emotional distress seriously.
  • Recognize that mental well-being is part of reproductive health too.

Because telling a girl ‘This is normal’ should never mean telling her to suffer silently.

Menarche is a reproductive milestone-but it is also part of a much bigger transition into adolescence.

The way we support girls during this moment can shape how they understand their bodies, health, confidence, and well-being for years to come.
