Dina Ibrahem: Is Femtosecond Laser the Future of Embryo Biopsy?

Dina Ibrahem, Embryologist at Queens Fertility Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Dmitry S. Sitnikov et al. published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences։

“Femtosecond Laser: The Future of Embryo Biopsy?

Could ultrashort laser pulses make trophectoderm biopsy safer?

A recent study by Sitnikov et al. (2026) explored the use of femtosecond lasers as an alternative to conventional millisecond lasers during TE biopsy.

Key Findings:

  • 280 fs laser pulses enabled precise TE cell separation, typically within 2–4 pulses.
  • ROS levels: No significant increase in oxidative stress was detected.
  • HSP70: Increased expression suggested a cellular stress response.
  • Implantation rates: 25.8% vs. 29.6% in controls, with no statistically significant difference.

The Takeaway:

Femtosecond lasers show promising potential for minimizing thermal exposure during embryo biopsy.

However, these findings come from mouse blastocysts, and further studies are needed before clinical application in human IVF laboratories.

Could femtosecond lasers become the next generation of embryo biopsy technology?”
