Makeba Williams: 2 Weeks of My 1-Year Term as President of The Menopause Society

Makeba Williams, President of The Menopause Society, shared on LinkedIn:

“Two weeks ago, in front of a sold-out 2026 Annual Meeting in San Diego, I began my one-year term as President of The Menopause Society.

It’s the honor of my career, and I want to use it to close the gaps that still keep women from the menopause care they deserve.

I’m proud to lead alongside:

  • President-Elect Dr. Carolyn Gibson,
  • Treasurer Dr. Emily Lau,
  • and Secretary Dr. Yamnia I. Cortés,
  • and to partner with our Medical Director, Dr. Stephanie Faubion, and Associate Medical Director, Dr. Monica Christmas.

Our meeting theme, ‘Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice,’ describes the work ahead.

The energy around menopause has never been greater.

But momentum only becomes impact if we close the gaps:

  • Between science and clinical practice
  • In clinician education
  • In access to quality menopause care
  • In policy and coverage
  • In workplace recognition and support
  • Between rigorous information and misinformation

Menopause science and care should serve the individual in front of us and answer the questions clinicians are actually asked.

That means research that reflects our population, a wider geographic footprint that includes rural communities, and measures that capture women’s lived experience.

And it means making sure effective options reach the patients who need them.

I see these gaps up close in our Midlife and Menopause Clinic at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria, where we care for women from Peoria and across central Illinois.

With more than 15,000 members, The Menopause Society is well-positioned to lead in research, clinical care, education, and policy.

Thank you for your trust.

Let’s get to work closing the gaps!”
