Tamuka Chekero: Exploring Relational Autonomy in Infertility Across Cultures
Tamuka Chekero, Research Associate at GIBS Business School, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in Culture, Health and Sexuality:
“What a way to open 2026!
I am super excited to share our new open-access article in Culture, Health and Sexuality:
‘Relational autonomy and the politics of reproduction: infertility and kinship demands in African and diasporic contexts’ (with Gerald Mabweazara).
Infertility is often framed as a private medical issue, but our research shows it is profoundly social, moral and relational. Drawing on interviews conducted in Zimbabwe and among African migrants in Aotearoa New Zealand, we examine how kinship (hukama/ubuhlobo), ubuntu, and family expectations shape reproductive experiences across borders.
Using a relational autonomy lens, we highlight how reproductive agency is negotiated within families and transnational networks. We discuss internalised moral scrutiny, the complex role of kin, and the creative strategies people use to navigate care, pressure, and hope.
This work calls for reproductive health policy and practice to take seriously the ethical and relational worlds in which infertility is lived.
