Marco Zaccaria: Link Between Vaginal Microbiota and Uterine Fibroids Explored
Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at H.S. Hospital Service SpA, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Xuetao Mao et al. published in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology:
“Recent scientific research is highlighting a significant correlation between the state of the vaginal microbiota and the development of uterinefibroids.
Women with uterine fibroids often have an alteration in their vaginal bacterial flora, in particular a lower concentration of protective lactobacilli compared to healthy women
There is a close link between the vaginal microbiota and hormone metabolism: some bacteria produce the enzyme beta-glucuronidase, which reactivates estrogens destined for excretion, putting them back into circulation. Since fibroids are hormone-dependent tumors, an excess of circulating estrogens promotes their growth
The integration of specific lactobacilli can help restore the balance of the flora and improve the health of the endometrium.
