Abinet Gadissa: Patience Rewards the Scan in Fetal Echocardiography

Abinet Gadissa, Maternal fetal medicine fellow at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Patience Rewards the Scan
When performing fetal echocardiography, the fetal position often determines how much detail we can obtain. When the fetal back is anterior, the spine lies close to the maternal abdominal wall, creating acoustic shadowing that makes evaluation of the outflow tracts and great vessel arches more challenging. The ribs and spine may obscure the optimal insonation angle, limiting clear visualization of the aortic arch and ductal arch.

Yet, sometimes fortune favors the examiner. If the fetus slightly adjusts its position, or with gentle probe angulation and patience, the arches may briefly unfold in a beautiful view, revealing the elegant curve of the great vessels. In those moments, persistence and a bit of luck turn a difficult scan into a rewarding one.”
