Progesterone Is More Than a Pregnancy Hormone – The European Fertility Society
The European Fertility Society (EFS) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What comes to mind when you hear ‘progesterone’?
For many, it’s simply a ‘pregnancy hormone.’ But the truth is far more fascinating.
Progesterone is not just about fertility. Yes, it prepares the uterus for implantation and supports early pregnancy – but its influence goes beyond reproduction. This steroid hormone also plays a role in:
- Modulating the immune system
- Protecting the nervous system
- Acting as a key signalling molecule across the body
What’s even more interesting is where it’s produced.
- The ovaries take the lead after ovulation.
- The placenta becomes the main source in pregnancy.
- Even the adrenal glands contribute small but important amounts.
It’s a reminder that hormones aren’t isolated players – they are part of a complex, beautifully coordinated system that keeps us functioning.
