Ying Cheong: Another Thought-Provoking Session at the ESHRE 2026 By Kirsten Tryde Macklon
Ying Cheong, Professor of Reproductive Medicine at the University of Southampton, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Another thought-provoking session at the ESHRE 2026 Precongress Course on Ovarian Stimulation and Fertility Preservation.
The session on reproductive function and assisted reproduction following ovarian tissue transplantation highlighted just how far fertility preservation has come. Ovarian tissue transplantation has evolved but one of the key discussions, however, focused on the challenges that remain. Despite successful transplantation, IVF outcomes are still relatively modest, with significant attrition occurring throughout the pathway, from cryopreservation and graft survival to follicular development, oocyte retrieval and embryo development. The relatively high empty follicle rate remains an important clinical challenge.
As our ability to preserve fertility continues to advance, the next frontier must be improving the efficiency of these techniques and translating restored ovarian function into higher live birth rates.
Is the next breakthrough better cryopreservation methods, such as vitrification, or should our focus be on improving graft survival and reducing post-transplant follicle loss?
An excellent session highlighting both how much has been achieved and how much opportunity remains for innovation in reproductive medicine.”
