Most people still say PCOS affects one in ten women – but that figure is outdated and too simple. A massive new global review, covering 157,000 women across 92 studies, gives a clearer picture. Using the standard Rotterdam criteria, the worldwide prevalence of PCOS is actually 12.1% – closer to one in eight women!
Where you live matters a lot: rates are higher in the Eastern Mediterranean (15.1%) and South-East Asia (14.3%), while Europe sits at 11.7%. Shockingly, there are still no reliable prevalence studies for the entire continent of Africa. This shows PCOS isn’t just one universal number – it varies by region, testing methods, and the diagnostic criteria your clinic uses.
