Christopher Robinson: A Comparative Analysis of Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Sonographic Techniques

Christopher Robinson, Associate Professor Maternal Fetal Medicine at University of South Carolina, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Sonographic measurement of placental volume: a comparative analysis of two-dimensional and three-dimensional sonographic techniques – Representative two-dimensional ultrasound used to calculate estimated placental volume. The maximal placenta width was identified by sweeping through the placenta while the ultrasound probe was held perpendicular to the placental disc. Once determined, the image was frozen to allow for caliper measurements of the maximal width determined from the placental tips of the crescent-shaped cross-section (width; yellow line 1).

Next, the apex of the curved maternal surface was determined (yellow + 2) and the height was measured by dropping a line from the +2 point to the yellow width line, maintaining a perpendicular intersection (height; yellow line 2). Starting again at the yellow + 2 point, a third line was drawn along the height line (now green), ending at the fetal surface of the placenta (green + 3) to create the thickness (green line 3). These numbers were then inserted into the estimated placental volume equation to calculate the estimated placental volume.”
