Marco Zaccaria: Transvaginal Ultrasound Detects Retrograde Menstruation in Most Women!
Marco Zaccaria,Global Product Manager at ESGE European Society Gynecology Endoscopy, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Here is an interesting recent study published in RBMC Reproductive BioMedicine Online and conducted by a team from the Università degli Studi di Milano
Research shows that transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) is an effective, noninvasive, and reproducible tool for detecting and quantifying the volume of free fluid in the pelvic cavity during the menstrual phase
This free fluid is used as a biological marker (or proxy) to identify retrograde menstruation—that is, the phenomenon in which menstrual blood flows backward through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity instead of flowing outward as normal
Using transvaginal ultrasound, the research team detected retrograde menstruation in more than two-thirds of the women examined
The study revealed substantial variability in fluid volumes. There is a clear positive correlation: women with heavier menstrual flow (hypermenorrhea) have significantly higher pelvic fluid volumes
The ultrasound approach validated by Dr. Noemi Salmeri and her team provides a true window into menstrual physiology, offering physicians a practical method for investigating the causes of pelvic pain and for preventing or monitoring the progression endometriosis and adenomyosis.”
