”Fresh vs Frozen Embryo Transfer: Which One Is Better?
One of the most common questions in IVF is whether a fresh or frozen embryo transfer offers better chances of success.
A fresh embryo transfer is performed a few days after oocyte retrieval, during the same ovarian stimulation cycle. In a frozen embryo transfer (FET), the embryo is vitrified and transferred in a later cycle after appropriate preparation of the endometrium.
With modern vitrification techniques, suitable embryos can generally tolerate the freezing and thawing process very well.
In some situations, FET may be the more appropriate option, particularly when there is a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), or when hormonal levels and endometrial conditions are not ideal during the stimulation cycle.
However, frozen transfer is not automatically better for every patient. In many cases, a fresh transfer can also be an appropriate and effective treatment option.
The decision should be individualized and may depend on:
- Embryo quality
- Endometrial thickness and receptivity
- Cause of infertility
- Ovarian response
- Hormonal status
- Risk of OHSS
Freezing an embryo does not make it better. The goal is to transfer the embryo when the uterine conditions are most favorable for implantation.
