You can’t see them.
You can’t feel them.
But trillions of microorganisms live on and inside the human body-and researchers are discovering that some of them may be deeply connected to women’s health.
Meet the female microbiome.
The vaginal microbiome is an ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.
And one group gets particular scientific attention:
Lactobacillus
These bacteria can help maintain an acidic vaginal environment that makes it harder for certain harmful microorganisms to thrive.
But the story goes far beyond infection.
Researchers are asking bigger questions:
Could the microbiome influence…
- Menstrual and vaginal health?
- Pregnancy outcomes?
- Fertility and reproductive health?
- Susceptibility to infections?
- Gynecologic disease?
- Response to treatments?
And here’s where the science becomes fascinating:
The microbiome isn’t the same for every woman.
Age, hormones, sexual activity, pregnancy, antibiotics, medications, lifestyle, and other factors can influence microbial communities.
