Zofia Kiestrzyn: Award-Winning Research on Endometrial Cancer in Uterine Polyps

Zofia Kiestrzyn, Medical student at University of Medical Sciences in Poznań, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On May 8th I had an honor to present my first original research paper in gynecology during the international Gynecology and Obstetrics New Trends 2026 Conference. The presentation was titled: ‘Endometrial cancer in polyps of the uterine cavity- rare finding or real threat?’.

With a help from Prof. Maciej Wilczak and Dr hab. Karolina Chmaj-Wierzchowska, we analysed the prevalence of malignant uterine polyps in a population of Polish women, based on the data of 4081 patients who underwent hysteroscopy under paracervical anesthesia. We also focused on identifying independent risk factors of malignancy in endometrial polyps.

In our group of 1861 patients with endometrial polyps, 12 were histopatologically diagnosed with endometrial cancer. This contributes to 0.64%, aligning with global trends (0.5-5% malignancy).

Amongst all risk factors considered (age, hypertension, abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility), age >50 years old resulted in statistical significance.

My poster presentation won 1st place among medical students and young doctors.”
