“Does Breast Cancer Stop You from Breastfeeding?
Not always.
One diagnosis should never define every mother’s breastfeeding journey.
Every situation is unique, and the answer depends on the type of cancer, treatment received, timing, and individual health.
Myths vs Facts
- Myth: Breast cancer means you can never breastfeed again.
Fact: Many women can still breastfeed from the unaffected breast after treatment, depending on their medical condition and their healthcare team’s guidance.
- Myth: Surgery always ends breastfeeding.
Fact: Breast-conserving surgery may affect milk production in the treated breast, but the other breast can often produce enough milk for successful breastfeeding.
- Myth: Chemotherapy and breastfeeding are safe together.
Fact: Most chemotherapy drugs and several targeted therapies can pass into breast milk, so breastfeeding is generally not recommended during treatment.
- Myth: Every breast cancer survivor has the same experience.
Fact: Recovery, fertility, lactation, and breastfeeding outcomes differ from one woman to another. Individualized care is essential.
