Prabhleen Kaur: Can Vitamin B12 Improve Egg and Embryo Quality?
Prabhleen Kaur, Senior Consultant IVF and Reproductive Medicine at Fortis Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient involved in DNA synthesis, cell division, and methylation, all of which are critical for reproductive health.
In women, adequate Vitamin B12 levels are important for oocyte development, embryo formation, and early pregnancy support. Deficiency in Vitamin B12 has been associated with poor egg quality, impaired embryo development, and increased risk of implantation failure.
In clinical research published in peer-reviewed reproductive medicine journals, Vitamin B12 status has been studied in women undergoing fertility treatment.
The findings were noteworthy:
- Improved oocyte (egg) quality
- Better embryo development and grading
- Enhanced cellular division and DNA integrity
- Improved overall reproductive outcomes in some groups
Vitamin B12 supports reproductive health by:
- Supporting DNA synthesis in oocytes and embryos
- Improving cellular energy metabolism
- Reducing homocysteine levels (important for implantation)
- Enhancing methylation processes critical for embryo development
Because egg development begins weeks before ovulation, optimizing micronutrient status before fertility treatment may help improve egg and embryo quality.
Vitamin B12 supplementation is generally safe and commonly used in preconception care, especially in women with deficiency or dietary risk factors.
