Is the Y Chromosome Facing Extinction or Is It on the Path to Reinvention? – Fertility Plus
Fertility Plus shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Is the Y chromosome facing extinction or is it on the path to reinvention? Scientists are divided on this topic! Some, like evolutionary biologist Jenny Graves, suggest that the Y chromosome could vanish entirely in the distant future, having lost around 97% of its genes over millions of years.
But wait! Evolution is adaptable! Several species have already evolved new ways to determine sex without a Y chromosome, and humans could follow suit.
On the other hand, MIT researchers argue that the Y chromosome has stabilized, with key genes remaining intact for millions of years. The truth might not be about extinction but rather evolution!
